HISTORY

   The Bell Model 212 Twin Two - Twelve 15 seat military/civil utility helicopter
first flew in 1968. As a military aircraft it was designated UH-1N in the USA and CH-135 in
Canada. The power plant is a PT6T-3 twin turboshaft. Each engine is capable of producing
900 Hp, but the combined output is de-rated to 1290 Hp. This twin engine feature
means increased safety in the event of engine failure and hence the 212 is a popular
helicopter for offshore gas and oil rig support as well as rescue operations.
   This helicopter was one of the two acquired by the Fuerza Aerea Uruguaya (Uruguayan Air Force) in 1982 for rescue operations. They were identified 030 and 031. The Bell 212 031 is based in Air Base 1, Carrasco, Uruguay and the Bell 212 030, the version in this file, was taken inside a C-130 'Hercules' in the late 80s to the Uruguayan Artigas Scientific Antarctic Station on Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetlands. Here, this helicopter serves as a cargo and base personnel transporter and on rescue operations. 
   This year, 2001, the Bell 212 031 served on a mission off the Rocha coast (300 km east of Montevideo, Uruguay) when it was called because the first helicopter to arrive at a sinking ship, a Westland Wessex, sank too because of the waves and strong winds. When the Bell 212 arrived the rescue team of the Wessex was floating around the few remains of the helicopter. As the Bell descended over the rescue team, which were to be rescued, tall waves took by it surprise, pulling it down into the sea. Many parts of the helicopter were damaged with the sea water, but all was not lost, there was a possibility of the helicopter taking off, as it floated in the sea with its floats, which you can see in grey on the model included in this file. Finally the helicopter managed to take off, taking everybody safely back home.
